Car Insurance For DUI Drivers

Filed Under (car insurance) by Admin

Once you have been slapped with DUI charges as a result of being caught driving under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicating substances, you start facing a host of drawbacks relating to your being able to drive a vehicle and most everything else that comes with owning a vehicle. US Legislation dictates a range of penalties for those who are caught driving while intoxicated. To start with, DUI offenders are asked to spend some amount of time in the police station. This is often done in order to let the effects of alcohol or whatever intoxicating substance was taken to wear off. It is a fact that alcohol and intoxicating substances affect a person’s physical and mental state. Logically, such person with impaired physical and mental functioning could pose a great amount of danger to those around him. Statistics show that drunk or intoxicated drivers have caused a large number of road accidents that result not only in injury and property damage but also in numerous deaths of innocent people.

Apart from the legalities, including revocation of driving privileges for a time period, there are other implications of being slapped with DUI charges even after the driving privileges have been restored. When a DUI offender’s license to drive has been re-instated, he will be required to file a form with his state’s motor vehicle department through his car insurance provider. In applying for car insurance, DUI offenders who have had their licenses re-instated will have to fill out the SR-22 insurance requirement, which is also referred to as future proof of financial responsibility. Submission of this form is mandatory as proof of a former DUI offender’s compliance to state requirements. For failure to file this form when applying for car insurance, DUI offenders could have their driving privileges suspended once again.

With regard to premiums for car insurance, DUI offenders are always slapped with higher premiums. DUI offenders would also be required by law to get higher coverages. The required insurance limits for former DUI offenders would vary from state to state. Former DUI offenders do not have a choice but to comply with their state’s required car insurance limits and documentation lest their driving licenses be revoked again. If you have been slapped with DUI charges and have had your driving privileges re-instated, you have to be careful not to violate any more state regulations. No matter how high the state required limits on your car insurance are, you have to make sure that you get the right amount of coverage. You also have to make sure that you have bodily injury coverage. There are insurance companies that can help you get the right amount of coverage. You can scout around for car insurance quotes so that you can compare each one and find one that best fits your needs and budget. Looking for car insurance that is rock bottom cheap is impossible. But, you can still find good deals at the best possible price for you and at the same time ensure that you are compliant with state requirements.
